Abstract:
In the past two years, Mr. Lei Zhang was supported by CSC and performed his research work as a visiting student supervised by Prof. Lei Zuo at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA. His research interests mainly focus on Dynamic Characteristics and Active Vibration Control of Radial Clearance Adjustable Bearing-Rotor System under Various Working Conditions. In the presentation, Mr. Lei Zhang will share his research and studying experience during the past one years in the US. In addition, the living and cultural experience will also be presented.

Title: The lower pad adjustable bearing reduces the vibration response of the rotor system during acceleration

Abstract: A lower pad movable bearing is proposed which has the ability to change the lubricating performance of the journal bearing. The structure and working principle of the adjustable bearing are introduced. This bearing can adjust the working status of the rotor system by changing the position of the bearing pad and reduces the vibration amplitude of rotor. In this paper, a simple rotor bearing finite element model is used to study the vibration response of the rotor system. Through research, it is found that the larger ellipticity can effectively reduce the amplitude of the rotor when the rotor speed is running at a certain speed away from the critical speed, and the vibration suppression effect can reach 67%. When the rotor passes a critical speed, reducing the ellipticity can significantly reduce the resonance amplitude of the rotor, and the vibration suppression effect reaches about 37%. The current study has achieved manual adjustment of the bearings pad, and the next research plan is to develop an intelligent controller that enables active adjustment of the bearings.
